The Story Grampians Shiraz 2006 Monday, May 12 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Grampians and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Hmmm well I think I like this one a little more than the 2005 vintage (more length) so logically I need to give it a slightly higher score, even though I have both 92 and 93 written on my pad (a trend you might begin to notice). I’d need to taste them side by side to be absolutely sure, rather than many months apart, but I’m as confident as you can ever be when dealing in absolutes. Well that’s my story anyway, and I’m sticking to it.
It’s fragrant and creamy with spice and pepper over dark cherry and fresh blackberry and a bit of the old liquorice coming up with air. It feels medium bodied in the mouth with excellent flow and nice fine smooth tannins, acidity perhaps a little unsettled at this early age, but set for a long future. There’s no heat or over-ripeness - just beautiful blackberry/dark cherry fruit seasoned with pepper, spice and subtle creamy oak running onto a good long finish. A boastful advertisement for stylish Grampians Shiraz at a painfully modest price.

There was something in the last GTWM about this wine and how it’s produced, and I’m sure that it garnered good press there. Do you know where this is available Gary?

It is available ex-winery via the website above and also at many online retailers - i.e. WineStar, Boccaccio, Auswine etc etc. and also probably at their bricks and mortar stores - Boccaccio and Strathmore Cellars.
Winorama, as far as I know, was the first to review this wine with the 2005 vintage in Sep last year. It’s been featured by Campbell in What’s Hot in AGT and also more recently been given the big thumbs up by Halliday in the Australian.

I jumped in, ordered 4xGrampians and 2xWestgates last week after reading Halliday’s reviews in his “Extra Drop” on the Compainion site.
Rory may’ve lost my delivery address that I gave him over the phone - got an email last night asking for it again. As I said in my email reply, I’m eagerly anticipating tasting this wine, the Grampians 06.
When I do, I’ll let you know if I think you’ve been a points miser, GW - and may order another 5 of it for later and 1 of the Westgate to taste it too, if there’s any of either left, even if you’ve not been miserly and I like it anyway.

Just checked the Winestar site - it’s the Grampians 05 that’s in the cellar list. Boccacio and Auswine have the 06 advertised, as GW noted above.

He mutters……..obscenely……..about the character of the host who has already described the “lesser” as a VERY good wine.
Then contemplates a duplicate of the 4/2 6pk already ordered.
Looking forward to your TN of the Westgate, Gary - 95/100?
