Toolangi Estate Chardonnay 2003 Sunday, Jan 29 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Yarra Valley and Variety and White and chardonnay
Made by Tom Carson, straw in colour. The nose is symphony of aromas: lemon, honeydew melon, minerals and vanilla. The palate is true to the nose, with just a touch of peaky acid in the mid-palate, but the structure is compelling, and the finish is very good, with some pith/lemon skin. Don’t serve too cold as it seems to better express itself with some warming. I prefer this to the Reserve. Really quite an excellent wine.

I saw the 2002 vintage of this wine in the clearance bin at Vintage Cellars for $19 (about half price), and gave it a go, and my God, I am glad I did. This was superbly crafted chardonnay, for me one of the best Australian chardonnays I have had, better than a Leeuwin Estate Art Series - which even though well made, tend to be showy. Less is definitely more with the Toolangi, and it’s elegance, focus and simplicity is something quite rare in the majority of Australian wines. The bargain buy of the year for me so far.
