Tyrrells Vat 1 Semillon 2002 Wednesday, Jun 4 2008
Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Variety and White and semillon et al
I had lunch at my local Italian with the affable Chris Tyrrell today and had a preview of their 2007 release reds (more later and wow!) but his little bag of tricks also contained a bottle of this, the mighty Vat 1 Semillon, flag bearer for the Great Australian White. He’s certainly more handy to have around than Felix the Cat…at least for the wine enthusiast.
It’s soft and limey with some fennel and a little spice - refined and delicate and that theme carries onto the palate which is fluid, fine and gentle with a just a touch of toasty bottle age beginning to show. The flavours are typical - of lemon and lime rind and the texture is lightly chalky and fluffy with a lemony acid bite on exit. It’s a delightful Vat 1 that is approachable now and a good bet for mid to long term cellaring.

Not if you bought in 2002 when it was priced at $22.50.

I know the Hunter reds are shot for ‘08. But how is the semillon shaping up for Tyrrell’s and others.

Tyrrells not even releasing any 2008 reds but from what I hear the Semillons are excellent - the ones that were picked at the right time and the Verdelho looks awesome.. So far I have only tasted (from bottle) the 2008 Meerea Park Hell Hole Semillon which is excellent. I also have some in the pile from Mistletoe etc. I need get into the office and pick up a few dozen for tasting soon..

Tasted from tank at Tyrrells Friday 30 May: Stevens Semillon ‘08 was the pick of this variety, ripe, though lighter than usual for this vineyard. Belford & Vat 47 Chardonnays from cask both showing well: Belford soft and fruity; Vat 47 with a ripeness balanced by a lightness and lingering acidity that promises much.
The ‘08 Verdelho (bottled) is fruity, clean and very fresh, offering easy drinking now, perhaps the best Verdelho “Spinner” has made.
