Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2007 Thursday, Apr 3 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Yarra Valley and Variety and White and chardonnay
I did not much like the inaugural Wickhams Road Chardonnay (a 2006 from Macedon), in fact, I chose not to review it. I thought it was a bit of a Martian wine; short and green. There are no such problems with this one though, or its even better looking twin, the 2007 Gippsland Chardonnay. The fruit comes from a slightly warmer site located about 3km away from the Hoddles Creek vineyard and comes off 30 year old dry grown vines. It has no lees stirring and sees only 10% new oak. Take me to your leader!
Refined and subtle it offers up melon and citrus scented fruits, a touch of flint, a little spice and dusty old oak. On the palate medium bodied with flavours of grapefruit, melon and spice. It has excellent fruit purity and gentle clean acidity that gives the wine an attractive softness, and while slightly blurred, it’s tight enough and has fine balance, freshness and drinkability. Armani at Big W prices.

Gary I had a different experience of the Macedon which I tried last night, it was pretty tight and incredible! Certainly didn’t find it short at all, it was clean and minerally and just enough fruit sweetness. Reminded me a little of the Hoddles Creek 07 too. Awesome drinking and I’ll be hitting the boys up for more.
