Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz 2006 Monday, Jul 23 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Coonawarra and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Interesting to see that this wine is still bottled under cork and the top end 2004 John Riddoch is under screwcap. Not sure what all that is about but there you go. I opened this wine at lunchtime today and it still looks pretty raw. I’ll check the bottle tomorrow and update the note accordingly…although I would suggest that a lot of people are going to pop the cork and drink this right now - despite its cellaring pedigree of yore. Subsequently updated and score dropped from 88 to 87.
Aromas of plum, blackberry, pepper, chocolate and burnt toast and char. On the palate medium bodied with plum, blackberry, pepper and charred wood flavours. Light dry grainy tannins and balanced acidity. Peppery toasty finish. It looks a bit raw and unsettled at the moment and more grapey than vinous. A bit of time in the cellar should help it come round I think.

Not after you’ve had your way with it. Twice.

I had this last night. Certainly does taste ‘cheap’ - thought it might even have some micro-ox treatment. This old icon should now be pushing its way to 30$ and offering some structure and interest - ie Balnaves Shiraz. Time won’t help this wine.

You are wise. I cannot for the life of me understand some of the 90+ point ratings for this vintage.
