Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 Wednesday, Aug 2 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Coonawarra and Variety and Red and cabernet et al

I went off John Riddoch for a while, but then the price went down and they looked much better value. I’ve got quite a few bottle of this particular wine, perhaps a dozen, and I’ve been looking at it, occasionally, thinking it is too young to open, far too young. But then it is already 7 years old, so I decided it was time to try a bottle.
Blackcurrants, with some smoky complexity and red capsicum. This is also some creamy oak and strong tannins – I’m sure I can smell them, and some cedar too. The palate shows blackcurrants, also black plums, with firm and ripe tannins, but not over the top, strong and resolute, beautifully textured (yes, I use that word a lot). With time, the tannins firmed up, but they could never be called unyielding. A classic Coonawarra cabernet; smooth and savoury, with heaps of class and potential. Will it get better? I hope so.

I really like this wine too. 1999 is a top vintage.

Agreed boys. The 1999 vintage actually let Coonawarra show some regionality. Rather than 1998 , etc which made everything look like it was on steriods.

You are wise Anthony…

Shame that no 00 was made…Coonawarra seemed to buck the SA vintage trend that year IMHO. Oh well, all the better for the Black Label!

Hi Linc
I had a 91 last night and it was holding up really well. Great balance and easily a few years to go.

Yes, ‘91 is terrific too - I think I still have a bottle of it left.

DM’s has this listed among it’s cellar releases this week for $59.90 which seems a reasonable price to me for the age/vintage so I’m thinking of getting a bottle (if there’s any left) as a counterpoint to the 98 I already have. Not interested in seeing if I can find it cheaper at auction.
Any opinions on the vfm ratio?

$60 sounds like pretty good value for an 8 yo wine if it has been cellared well.
