Bugger. I just atomised a Spiegelau Bordeaux glass. It’s the third this week including a Riedel Chianti and a humble ISO. I think I must have been spiked with the infamous “Clumsy Drug”.
Aromas of blackcurrant and red fruits, aniseed, gravel, black olive and cedar oak. Fine and fragrant. On the palate medium to full bodied with blackcurrant, redcurrant, tobacco and cedar oak flavour. Very tight with super clarity and definition. It has strong gravelly but very fine tannins and brisk fresh acidity. Super long red fruit and black olive finish. The quality and pedigree (along with the screwcap closure) almost guaranteeing that this will become one of the Coonawarra greats.

Gary, Thanks for the review on this - just bought a bottle on spec based on vintage reputation etc and the history of this marque, as a 21st b’day treat for my youngest (her birth year) looks like this will last the distance with no probs.

Don’t think they made an 02 David so quite favourably I would assume. The 98 is a bigger more heavily oaked style.

We got the JR Cabernet and the Michael Shiraz a while ago for our regular tastings and finally tried it yesterday.It’s a tight and leaner style indeed with great power and intensity. I reckon you don’t get it more ‘Coonawarra’ than with this wine but I thought the mint on the nose to be a bit overpowering.

I’ve just read in the current Vintage Cellars promo that the 2005 vintage John Riddoch and Michael have been released. I haven’t seen them anywhere else. Any news on when they’ll be a little more widely available and if they’re destined for your tasting bench soon?

Yes. Had them at a tasting and they are both very good. I won’t review cellaring reds over a ten minute tasting though…so I’ll wait for them to be sent in..or not as the case may be.

Lucky enough to taste both the ‘05 JR & Michael at last years’ Coonawarra tasting roadshow (Sydney) and thought them to be the pick of the offerings.

05 JR has the same unexpected approachability as the black label (allowing for the stylistic defferences between the two). Though ready for the long haul, not as agressive, tannic etc as other vintages I have tried when young. The cellar is suitably stocked now.

They just arrived here in Saskatchewan, Canada. $64 a bottle seems like a steal..bought 3.
