Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Saturday, Jul 19 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Coonawarra and Variety and Red and cabernet et al
I’ve not seen much of this about retail which could be a result of any or all of 1) sold out 2) not sold at the places where I’d normally look 3) limited production 4) staggered release.
It smells and tastes of liquorice, black fruit, cedar and has a slight floral perfume. In the mouth full bodied with classy saturating fine grained Cabernet tannins and perfectly pitched fruit weight to match. Certainly dry and with big extract but not over done - it offers strength without heaviness. Again oak is good and not overplayed. Finishes fresh and red fruited with superb length of flavour. It’s all class and (after a good decant) certainly quite approachable as a young wine if you suddenly succumb to a foolish mood.

Perhaps a silly question, but which do you think is ‘better’…? 04 or 05. They clearly both sound the goods.

The differences maybe are illustrated by the 2004 and 2005 Black Labels. The 2004 more red fruited and the 2005 richer and more black. I like them, equally, but perhaps the 2004 for stylistic reasons.

I schnaffled a dozen of this last week for $62 a bottle.

Very impressive for my tastes. An absolute beauty.

Certainly limited release - Dans in my location allocated 6 only. However I can access more from another outlet at $70/bottle in 1/2 doz purchases - not necessarily all JR in the mix.
Have tried this and loved it but have held off on the 2004 as that is for daughters 18th. Agree with comments on differences between 04 and 05 Bl too

There is some of this about, though it is a bit low key. I am waiting for a certain store (!) that has quite a few in stock to offer their usual 20% off for 6+ bottles so that I can go grap about 4 or so - I’ve gone a bit overboard on Coonawarra Cabernet of late so that will do I think. I don’t think anyone will touch them because they’ve still got a couple of 2004s left!

There was only 400 dozen or so made, so snap them up if you can find them. The cellar door has some I think.

Surely its more than 400 cases..

Maybe 4000

$69.99 at Dan Murphy’s, or about $4 less in a mixed six. But some DM’s seem to have run out (was out doing some recon on the weekend). I went to a First Choice in Cleveland, Brisbane that had about ten or so 2004 at $72 (if anyone is interested), but no 2005.
Can’t comment on the quality. I think I’ll trust GW, CM et al. and leave alone for 10+ years.
Gary, drink this before 2004 I’m assuming? (using the BL analogy)

Yes. I think so. The 2005 more approachable.
